Wellbeing at MOSL
We have transitioned from a small team of dedicated Mental Health First Aiders to a wider network of Mental Health Champions, expanding participation and fostering innovation in the delivery of our wellbeing interventions. Activities delivered included monthly charity walks, focused health events, such as an inclusive hormone health workshop and promoting Wellness Action Plans to encourage personal reflection and support open conversations about wellbeing. We also reinforced our use of Discovery Insights with a targeted resilience session.
Mental Health First Aiders
At MOSL we believe mental health is as important as physical health. Since 2023 we provided all colleagues with the opportunity to improve their understanding of mental wellbeing. Working with our local provider SolentMIND, we provided certified Mental Health First Aider training. We now have 11 colleagues who are Mental Health First Aid trained and a further 45 trained as champions.
Diversity Society
Our Diversity Society has driven many positive changes in MOSL's culture. All colleagues have received and benefited from Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) training. The team regularly run Lunch and Learn and Breakfast sessions to raise awareness. We choose to share our knowledge by hosting EDI workshops and webinars in association with IWater. We have also produced an EDI Toolkit so other organisations can use it.
EDI
In conjunction with QA, our training provider, we rolled out EDI training across the company in 2024 and targeted three specific areas: unconscious biases, sexism and emotional intelligence. The purpose of the training was to encourage colleagues to reflect on the things that affect their thinking and decision-making, as well as consider how well they understand themselves and others around them. The sessions included case studies and real-life scenarios which colleagues discussed at length. It also gave them various tools to support them in their work, such as the BID model (“Behaviour, Impact, Desired outcome”). Colleagues found the sessions useful and enlightening.
Whilst fairness, equity and inclusion should be engrained into everything an organisation does, it is often important to be intentional and set aside dedicated time to explore different concepts and perspectives. Discussion and debates are essential parts of EDI work.
Green Team
The Green Team is a MOSL Employee Resource Group where members share and promote sustainable practices to reduce our carbon and water footprint both in the office and at home. As part of our 2023-24 Sustainability Plan deliverables, MOSL was awarded the Waterwise Water Checkmark for Offices. This accreditation recognises and demonstrates our commitment to water efficiency. We also established our carbon footprint, published our first annual Carbon Statement and Reycling Policy.
Climate Change - Green Team
In October, we published our 2023/24 Carbon Statement, marking its second annual report and allowing for year-on-year comparison. CO2 emissions totalled 90.15 tonnes, a 28% reduction from 2022/23, largely due to more accurate data on commuting and office heating. This new figure now serves as the baseline for future efforts.
To improve reporting accuracy, we introduced a new expenses app in January to track travel-related emissions. In March, we launched an Environmental Policy, outlining sustainability commitments and encouraging best practices. While MOSL cannot mandate these standards for others, it now factors environmental responsibility into supplier selection and has engaged top suppliers to better understand its Scope 3 emissions.
Digital accessibility
MOSL is committed to creating inclusive digital experiences for all. While we’re still on our journey, we’ve taken meaningful steps to make our communications and resources more accessible—ensuring everyone, including those with disabilities, can engage with our content with ease and confidence.
Following an audit of our website against Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) in 2023, we continued to implement several improvements to adhere with global standards, documenting our progress on the Accessibility webpage.
This included a more accessible colour palette, improving our use of alt text and introduced ARIA labelling in several areas for users that use assistive technology. With improved knowledge of accessibility standards, we will continue to embed accessibility standards into future improvements.
Charity, community and volunteering
Community is very important to us. Colleagues have proven themselves time and again to be generous and charitable, whether through donations or offering help in-kind. Each year MOSL allows colleagues to use two working days to volunteer for any charity or community group of their choosing.
In partnership with CGI, we were able to help provide six community teams with new team uniforms worth up to £500 each. Nominated by MOSLers, three football teams, a hill climbing triathlon team, a school basketball team, a lifesaving swimming squad, a mini-rugby team and a dance squad have a new kit.
Focus charity
Each year, our colleagues choose one charity on which to focus their efforts. In 2024-26, NO LIMITS was chosen as MOSL’s focus charity
One highlight was the 2024 No Limits Christmas Party held at their advice centre in Southampton. Partnering with our White Building neighbours, Documation and the Duke on the Test pub in Romsey, collectively we provided food, entertainment, and carefully selected presents for the young people and staff. Thanks to colleagues, Board Members and industry partners' generosity, no child was without a Christmas present.
Education
This year, colleague development at MOSL embraced the theme “Whatever MOSLers can imagine, they actually create.” As a learning organisation, we champion self-directed learning, captured through personal development plans. We also hosted a dedicated development day with curated training, resources, and activities to support tailored growth across our agile learning environment.
In 2024/25, we also took on six interns from the University of Southampton and hosted work experience students.
Providing industry insight
Our self-serve maps, dashboards, and data models help users understand national environmental and water scarcity challenges and how trading parties can work together and with their customers to reduce water demand.
We regularly attend events online and in person to share our insight. We aim to be transparent and strive for simplicity. Sometimes it's easier to for people to be curious when they can see who is sharing the information. That's why we believe if we are open and clear about issues, priorities and the reasons behind decisions, it will encourage others to ask questions to better understand the ‘why’.
