In April, MOSL commissioned Custerian to research and produce an independent report on the potential data use cases for the business water market.
This work focused on the market use cases for advances in data analytics and the increasing volume of granular consumption and enriched data the water industry has access to due to smart meter rollouts and demand reduction targets.
The aim of the report, developed through extensive interviews with trading parties and a range of stakeholders, is to inform our approach to the management of smart meter data and how we best prioritise our data services.
Through interviews with over 60 individuals across 24 organisations, the report sets out three key themes to be considered in the use of data. These are:
- The Benefit of Standardisation – in the rollout of smart metering which can lead to smarter settlement
- The Focus of Reduced Consumption – the need to deliver against Defra’s 9% reduction target for non-household customers
- MOSL as a Facilitator – due to the central position it has and the data it can access.
The report continues to establish five focus areas for MOSL to consider aligned to these themes, including its role in data quality improvements and standardisation, the facilitation of easier access to data and collaboration with stakeholders to shape data strategies that benefit the market as a whole.

As one of the defined outputs of MOSL’s Data and Analytics Roadmap and a build on the Data Personas Custerian also supported the work of, the independent report has been reviewed by both MOSL and the Metering Committee, who will now be exploring how we progress the recommendations in the report, working closely with trading parties.
