MOSL was pleased to provide feedback on wholesalers’ draft Water Resources Management Plans (WRMPs) as part of the current consultation process.
In a letter from our CEO Sarah McMath to wholesaler CEOs, we highlighted the next WRMP period is particularly significant for non-household customers as it is the first time since the market opened in 2017 that it has been through a full planning cycle.
Having reviewed all water companies’ draft plans and the best-value regional plans, we do not believe that they are currently considering the needs and potential of the non-household market sufficiently.
We are pleased to see some commitments to the non-household market in draft WRMPs, including some commitments to rolling out smart meters. Overall, however, we are disappointed by the lack of acknowledgement of the role of the NHH market in reducing water consumption and the lack of detail or targets.
We set out what we’d like to see in final WRMPs later this year, including clear recognition of the size and importance of the non-household market and the role it has to play to deliver Defra’s target to reduce non-household demand by nine per cent by 2038.
MOSL’s responses are available here. We look forward to working with wholesalers as they finalise their WRMPs. We have also asked for wholesalers to clarify their commitments around non-household smart metering and water efficiency. We plan to publish a summary of this in March.*
We are expecting South West Water's draft WRMP to be published in the coming weeks and will also respond to that in due course.**
