MOSL has published its response to Water UK's consultation on its vision for what the water sector should look like in 2050 and what might be needed to achieve it. We support Water UK's ambition for the sector, and welcome its initiative and timely consultation.

The sector faces pressure from public and political expectations, combined with systemic challenges from climate change and population growth. It also has opportunities from Water UK's international leadership on net zero, the beginnings of the next price review and COP26.

The consultation is broken down into the four sectons below. MOSL's response focuses on the questions posed by Water UK on page 41 of its draft document. Our full response is available here.

Challenges, Trends, Risks and Opportunities

We agree with the challenges Water UK identifies – especially around meeting the sector’s ambitions around innovation, net zero, leakage and the goals of the 25 Year Environment Plan.

Vision

We support Water UK’s vision for the sector, and particularly welcome the ambition to increase the social value the sector provides. It is crucial Water UK engages with all parts of the sector on both the development and delivery of its vision – including the non-household retail market, non-domestic customers and MOSL.

Sector Strategic Responses

We believe the sector must respond collaboratively to the challenges, centred on a consistent, clear purpose – which is already emerging through the vision work.

Building a shared endeavour to achieve progress

The sector is already adept at involving a wide range of stakeholders – but has stepped away from engagement with the non-household retail market. The Environment Agency and Ofwat have recognised its importance to achieving ambitious sector-wide goals – particularly improving water efficiency and protecting resources. Water UK and the wholesale sector must ensure it works with all parts of the water industry.
