Water Efficiency Cambridgeshire Fund

The Water Efficiency Cambridgeshire Fund (weCB Fund) is a £1.6m government-funded programme designed to support practical water-saving projects and innovative efficiency solutions for non-household customers in the Cambridge Water Resource Zone.

MOSL was asked to administer and launch the Fund on behalf of the Ministry of Housing, Communities & Local Government (MHCLG).

The Fund brings together government, the water sector and delivery partners and aims to help free up 200,000-300,000 litres a day i.e. 2-3 megalitres per day (Ml/d) by 2032.

The fund was announced on 19 March. Applications for Round 1 of the fund will open from 13 April to 1 May 2026, with a simple online application process designed to support a range of applicants - from local businesses to water sector specialists and innovators. Further rounds and their timelines will be announced in Spring 2026.

Aim

The aim of the weCB Fund is to:

  • Support non-household organisations to reduce water use through practical, measurable projects
  • Encourage collaboration across the business water market to deliver lasting water efficiency improvements
  • Help protect water resources in Cambridgeshire while supporting sustainable economic activity
  • Capture learning on how water efficiency incentives can be implemented in the the non-household market

By providing targeted funding and clear guidance, the Fund is designed to make it easier for organisations to take action and deliver meaningful water savings where they are needed most.

MOSL’s role

MOSL is the administrator of the weCB Fund, acting on behalf of the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG).

MOSL’s role includes:

  • Fund administration: establishing and administering the Fund, including setting up governance arrangements and managing payments to successful projects
  • Programme design and governance support: helping design the scheme and its governance structure, drawing on MOSL’s experience of running market-wide, multiyear improvement programmes

  • Data and insight: using market data and insight to support the effective running of the programme, including mapping eligible non-household customers
